Getting grub to boot automatically

Excuse my ignorance, here's a really dumb question for you:

Every time I boot linux, I have to manually type in the root, kernel, initrd, boot sequence, and I know there's a way that I don't have to but past that I'm completely clueless. So if one of you could explain that in a way I can understand, I would appreciate it.

If you want people to help you, you need to provide more details e.g. what distribution oyu are running, how you installed the bootloader etc.

I'm on Ubuntu, whichever the most recent version is... Grub was included in the installation. That's all I know, really.
