I was getting following error while installing rpm package.

rpmdb: Berkeley DB library configured to support only private environments
rpmdb: Berkeley DB library configured to support only private environments
error: db4 error(22) from dbenv->open: Invalid argument
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Invalid argument (22)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

i also tried to write a patch - %__dbi_cdb create cdb private mpool mp_mmapsize=16Mb mp_size=1Mb in a /etc/rpm/macros.

after writing this, i again tried to install rpm package but it just hanged.

can anyone point me in a right direction.

Could you be more specific: 1. Where did you get your rpm.
2. What is command your are using to install it?
3. BTW: Make sure you are logged in as a root.
4. Type command: "rpm -qlp your.rpm" What does it show?

Few usefule "rpm" commands:
rpm -ivh your.rpm -> unpack
rpm -qlp your.rpm -> shows content
rpm -qp your.rpm -> shows content in different format
rpm -qi your.rpm -> shows what it does
rpm -q your.rpm -> make sure it is not installed
rpm -qa *.rpm -> all packages installed on your computer
