I lsond a laptop awhile back with win &rh and now he want linux of, how can I do this?

I would try this in the following order.

- Boot to Windows.
- Type fdisk /mbr
- Reboot your machine
- *If it comes back and boots straight into Windows with no sign of Linux, then continue*
- Boot from your RH install CD.
- Proceed to the bit where you select the partitions... and remove all the Linux partitions, and possibly reformat them as Windows ones.
- Do not proceed any further with the install.
- Reboot to Windows
- You should now have a 'new drive' attached to your system.
- Open up My Computer and format the new partition under Windows.

There may be some omissions in my saga, as I have not done this in a very long time now.

1. Presumably you know how to boot into Windows?
2. You need to open up a dos box... and type fdisk /mbr. You might find it more helpful to boot Windows in 'safe mode - command prompt only' to do this.
3. Well, I should hope you know how to reboot your machine.
4. *If you installed Linux more than once without doing the above steps, then it is more than likely that simply doing these will not have changed much. If you boot straight to Windows, without having a LiLo or Grub screen, then you should be OK. If you do get a LiLo or Grub screen, or even some Lilo/Grub errors, then you'll need to come back and ask some more questions.
5. Boot from your RedHat install CD. In your case, you will need to boot your Slack CD into rescue mode (if it has one... I forget). Otherwise, some other rescue media.... tomsrtbt?
6. Go through the steps necessary until you can repartition your harddisk. If you're booting into some rescue more, you should be able to do this straight away, but you'll need to use either fdisk or cfdisk. If you're booting from your RH CD, or your Mandy CD, or something else, you may find you have a nice GUI-type harddisk partitioning program. Either way, you need to remove the Linux partitions, and re-assign the 'unpartitioned space' (dead-space) as Windows FAT32. You can format these under Linux rescue if you want, but I suggest you leave the formatting to Windows later.
7. DO NOT INSTALL LINUX AGAIN. THIS WOULD OTHERWISE DEFEAT THE OBJECT OF GETTING RID OF LINUX FROM YOUR SYSTEM.
8. Well.... reboot your machine and pray that Windows boots OK. If you were daft enough to get rid of the Windows partitions as well as the Linux partitions in step 6, then you've had it... you need to install everything again!
9. When you boot to Windows, providing everything has gone OK so far, you should find that there's a 'new harddisk' in My Computer.
10. Do as it says... format the new 'drive'.

That wasn't so bad, now, was it?
