Gentoo Wierdness!!!

Hi, folks!
I'm having strange difficulties with starting gnome-terminal after just installing Gentoo1.4.
Root can run the terminal no problem, but I (regular user) would get a message like "No such file ...." in the terminal window before it closed automatically. I figured it was a groups thing, so I added myself to every group that root was a member of. Also, I used usermod -s gnome-terminal to add a shell. Now when I try to open gnome-terminal, it goes crazy!! Like it'll be flashing between two places on my screen, trying to open twice, but it can't. When one closes, it tries again. This happens about 50 times before crashing. icon_eek.gif
Has this happened to you? If not, you probably know what you're doing. I, however, do not.
Also, I (regular user) can no longer start Gnome as user. I have to start GDM as root. THEN I can login as either user or root. BI-ZARRE!!
Does anybody know what's going on????

Anybody!!!???

Does anybody know how to start over and redo my /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files???

bash-2.05a# userdel jeff
bash-2.05a# useradd -m -s /bin/bash jeff
bash-2.05a# passwd jeff
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
bash-2.05a#

I took /etc out of the protected files list and ran: emerge baselayout, but I'm still getting:
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
