Well, do you know what the smp kernel does actually? Its mainly for systems that use or have more than one processor on the motherboard. If you don't have two cpu's or more, there's really no need for it. Find and compile a regular or custom kernel if you want 2.6.x for your kernel.

Ya, I knew it was for multiple processors, but I've heard of people using it for the 2.6 because of problems with 2.4
Thnx

I've had no problems with 2.4.x series. It's a proven reliable kernel. Most upgrade kernels to add support previous versions didn't have or to patch security issues. I'd say, get the 2.6 kernel if you want it but compile it to suit your own needs, why have a kernel compiled with support you don't need? Just a thought.

People are using the smp kernel on the live cd to install gentoo because it uses the linux26-headers then they want to use gcc3.4.

the smp is not only for multiprocessor systems it is also with pentium4 with Hyperthreading support.

2.4.x kernels are very reliable, thats why Pat Volkerding decided to keep it in Slackware 10

whereas 2.6.x kernels although very good in quality haev not matured yet, we can see this as no 2.7 branch has started
