Question gentoo preemptive kernel

Hi, I am just new to this forum, so here goes my first linux question.

I just installed linux gentoo, with preeptive kernel, I compiled the kernel without any problem at all..

Once I have compiled my kernel I just boot from it, and I began testing it by playing chromium, here's the problem I found: sound speed is ok, but when games display graphics either in fullscreen mode or window mode is too slow, the speed is about 5 frames per seconds.

Here are the computer characteristics:
Computer: Compaq, Presario 4020 Series
Processor: Pentium 4
Speed: 2GHz
Memory: 256MB
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 4
Video Memory: 64Mb
Kernel: 2.4.20-gaming-r3
Linux Distro: Gentoo 1.4
when compiling: I type: genkernel --config
Option enabled before compiling:
Kernel Preemptive Support: yes
Processor Familiy: Pentium 4
Enable: MTTR:
Low Latency Scheduling: Enabled

Am i Missing something when compiling my kernel?

Thanks in advance

did you run "emerge nvidia-glx" and "emerge nvidia-kernel"?
and btw, if you did, did you select the nvidia driver in your xfree config file?

Hi
Yes, my /etc/X11/XF86Config files has the nvidia driver selected, and I just did:
emerge -k nvidia-kernel
emerge -k opengl
opengl-update nvidia
opengl-update xfree
Then I restart X
Also I checked the nvidia module is loaded into the kernel.

hmmm, it could be some probs with the "emerge -k opengl".
i am also running gentoo 1.4 using a geforce 4 mx, but i didnt run anything like
"emerge -k opengl", "opengl-update nvidia" and opengl-update xfree".
have you tried checking the xfree log file for any module load errors or something?
of course it could also be the nvidia drivers, have you tried it running a different version of the drivers?

Cool

Thanks chup it worked out.!!!!

Here the is the solution I would like to share with the community (perhaps lots of peoples already know it)

To play quake3 for linux and/or chromium or whatever game you have you need:

To have your prremptive kernel
you have as you told me: have the emerge -k nvidia-kernel
2nd you have to enable the hardware acceleration enabled inside the /etc/X11/XF86Config file

Here is the core of everything
1.- put into your config file: load glx
2.- Also put:
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce"
Driver "nvidia"
VideoRam 65536 <------Depends on how much videoRAM you've got!!
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NV17 [GeForce4 MX 440]"
Option "RenderAccel" "TRUE"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate

3.- Restart X and play chromium/quake and woooooow awesome speed, hell of a sound!!!
