Gentoo Portage and packages

at home i use dial up(which disconnects after 2hrs) to connect to the internet, so emerging things like kde won't work for me. I did however download the latest Gentoo livecd and the package cd at work and just copied the portage tree off of cd1 and the packages from cd2, but now if i 'emerge -k kde' it says updating packages for a while(a few seconds) then gives up and says 'run fixpackages to fix the problem' and then moves on to installing kde but instead of using the packages on the hdd, it tries to download them.

any ideas?
