Gentoo performance better than others?

As I get it, Gentoo compiles software optimized to the local hardware so it is supposed to have better performance than other distros. But is the difference really perceptible and worth changing over from a distro one is comfortable with to Gentoo or its related distros like sabayon?

In some cases it is, in some cases it's not. In a way it depends on what you mean by "better performance." If you're not careful with your CFLAGS, you can end up with some pretty under-performing stuff. If you pull from the unstable branch, you can end up with some unstable stuff. On the other hand, if you're careful with your CFLAGS and stick with the stable branch, Gentoo can certainly outperform other distros.

that is true and if everything is set up right you might see a small performance gain, however it takes forever it seems to update/install software because you have to compile everything. Never used sabayon, but from what I understand some binary packages are provided, but in my opinion that kind of defeats the reason for using Gentoo in the first place
