Gentoo is there an easier way?

Hi

Can anyone tell me if there is an easier way to install Gentoo....

I have no luck so far getting install up & running ....

Any help would be grateful

Dave

On boot up I get to RAMDISK block 0 (then system halts)

unfortunately there isn't. they only thing i can suggest is that you redouble your efforts with the install docs and see what comes up.

Yeah it can be painful, but once you are up and running you find that all that effort was woth it ;)

When you say you can get the install up, do you mean you cannot boot of the CD?

try installing while using knoppix, this way you can easily check web pages for any info you might need (you can also do this with when you boot of the gentoo cd, using lynx ;))

You can also get any info you need with the docs that are provided with the install CD.

I will have another go at install.....

Knoppix install interesting idea......

Thank you

DavidTempler

Where exactly are you having the problems with installing Gentoo?
One of the things that I did to help myself make sure everything got done was to make a check list and physically 'check' things off as I proceeded through the install. This helps because it allows you know exactly where you may have missed something or encountered errors.

I found this to be helpful after botching up my first attempt miserably.
Stick with it, Gentoo is a very rewarding system once it is up and running.

Best of luck

Hi

I printed off install instructions and read them through first then followed the stage 3 + GRP install route...

I managed to reboot system but I think there is a problem with initrd ..

I am going to remove (# comment out) initrd from lilo & give it another shot

Back to chrooting in again

Try doing the install using GRUB instead of LILO.
GRUB has some nice features that LILO lacks and is much more intuitive.

fatgod 12-12-2003 01:49 PM

I feel as though I have to defend LILO here ;) It's easier and it works. What more do you want?

DavidTempler 12-13-2003 06:38 AM

Hi fatgod

I agree if it works why anything else (I only know how to use LILO anyway)

I have (I must be mad) reinstalled Gentoo & I can get to log in....

All I need to do now is sort out XF86Config & then Gnome
