Gentoo (2.6.20 kernel) HELP

Hi,

I've been trying to get my sound working in Gentoo (2007 LiveDisk install, following http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-...ickinstall.xml)

I've recompiled the kernel several times and emerged/unmerged the alsa-drivers but to no avail.

My soundcard is a Trust C-Media CMI8x38 PCI chipset which uses the snd_cmipci module - I have tried compiling this as a kernel module and as an alsa module but STILL no sound.

Here are some example errors:

After running alsaconf (strangely the card shows up twice):
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting snd_cmipci (/lib/modules/2.6.20-gentoo-r8/alsa-driver/pci/snd-cmipci.ko): Invalid module format
Using the following kernel config:
Code:
Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=y

#
# Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
#
CONFIG_SND=m
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM=m
CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=m
CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m
# CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY is not set
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS_PLUGINS=y
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=y
CONFIG_SND_RTCTIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_RTCTIMER_DEFAULT=y
# CONFIG_SND_DYNAMIC_MINORS is not set
CONFIG_SND_SUPPORT_OLD_API=y
# CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PROCFS is not set
# CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PRINTK is not set
# CONFIG_SND_DEBUG is not set
The most annoying thing (after hours and hours of trying to get this work) is that when I was originally installing gentoo; I accidentally let the install run into Xorg/Xwindows mode and figured I'd give it a try.
During the install I emerged the alsa-drivers and my sound was working fine. So I assumed it was the gentoo default kernel config that caused this, so I tried zcat'ing the /proc/config.gz from the Livedisk to somewhere and loading that configuration to another kernel compile, but it still doesn't work.

Please help, I'm desperate now! Also, please inform me if there is any info that I've missed out that could help you to help me.

I saw that Fatal Error just yesterday, that is brought about by not using the proper kernel source. For me, I was upgrading from Mandriva repositories and installed a single processor kernel when my hyper threading CPU is SMP. After removing the bad and installing the good, no more "invalid format" modules produced.
