GeForce installation problem

I'm trying to set up 3D acceleration for a GeForce 2 card. The nvidia generic drivers that came with Mandrake 9.1 only support 2d. I downloaded and successfully (?) installed the self-installable drivers from nvidia. I got no error messages, but X doesn't start. The log says that the nvidia kernel module can't initialize, and something about 'no valid screens'. The module seems to be loaded according to /sbin/lsmod.
Only if I switch to the old 'nv' driver in the XF86Config-4 file does X work again.

I haven't been able to figure out the solution myself with the nvidia README files, let alone the X documentation

Does anybody know what to do?

thanks!

After some tinkering woth the diagnostic tools, it appears that the module loaded is not the proper one; and that I need to compile the sources of the module to link it with the kernel (with 'make install') I've programmed in c under Linux before but this is the first time I try this, and I'm getting lots of errors. And I've screwed the GLX installation somehow my tiny OpenGL tutorial programs complain that GLX is not available...

If somebody ever met this kind of problem, please help.

Thanks

ps. I managed to get to this point without realizing I hadn't the kernel sources installed... I've fixed that, so no more compilation errors; now I get a kernel panic instead
And the glx libs are unavailable because the installation makefile removes them prior to replacing them with the new ones; I fixed that too.

I've already tried, and though it says everything is ok, and I've updated the XFConfig-4 file, the new kernel module doesn't load; or that's what a diagnostic script (nv_check.sh) says.
This is the first time I do something like this, I think I'm probably missing some step so obvious that they don't mention it in the docs.
Like 'doing a modules update' (how?) or reconfiguring the kernel to load the module at boot, or something.

Guess it's time to get back to the howto's...

Thank you for your help!
