erm, nice to have the end result, but there's really no way you should ever consider reinstalling just for that... that's a real shame.

For debian, packages:

Code:
build-essential  gcc build-essential gcc gcc++
check CC to do the right export CC

Please ask us for further questions
check this for kernel compiling:
