I am new to Linux and have had several problems that this site has been able to help me with, Thankyou. I want to be able to use the linux messenger, gaim. Is there anyone that could take me through it step by step, it looks so simple, i just dont know what i can be doing wrong.

Just add an account in the gaim configuration and then check the "enable" box and it signs you in.

sorry, how do you add the accont, and i'm sure i haven't seen anything that says enable.what are you supposed to write in the account bit,your email address?

No, you'd write the username/password/etc for the messenger account in question.

I'm trying to change my buddy's name/nickname/alias in gaim v. 1.5.0. Please help. Thank you.

Please do not thread-hijack in the future. Have you tried right clicking on the buddy and selecting the "Alias Buddy.." option?

My apologies for use of the term "thread hijacking". All I meant was that for a separate/different problem, a new thread should be started. I meant it only constructively and I apologize if it was taken otherwise.

Basically you did hijack an existing thread. Yes, the thread is about Gaim but your own question is not the same problem as the OP. To get better exposure, it's always best to just create your own threads when asking questions.

Start gaim, click "Accounts", click "Add". Select the type of account you have, enter your username and password, and click OK. You can then sign in using this account.

By username do you mean the email address? I have a yahoo account and i dont have a username just the address

It would be whatever you use to sign in. If you sign in with an email address, use it, as it will be treated as a username.

When you to to Yahoo!Mail to check your mail you have to sign in with a user name and password before it will go to your mailbox. It's the same user name for messenger. It will be what comes before "@yahoo.com" in your email address.

Ok i've got that. Now i'm being told to download the new yahoo messenger, i think i've done it but where do the downloads go? i have no icons. I have tried looking but cannot find it, so please someone, where is it and what do i do when i find it? thankyou

Gaim works in place of Yahoo! Messenger. There's no point in installing both. If you have gaim running and your user name and password entered, you're all set. Have you checked out the FAQ?
