ftp from the top

I just used ftp on my debian server yesterday, but now I can not log in. My main web admin guy is A-wall at the moment, so can someone help me trouble shoot this? The only thing that could have changed is the eth0 eth1 config in ifconfig. Symtems are I can ping the linux box but when I try to ftp in I just get a connection faild. Where can I start to trouble shoot this problem?

Got it to work. Don't really know what it was. I know somewhere in there I did ifdown and then ifup a few times, but when I first encountered this problem I was able to ping my server.

Thanks Joseph for the help I am sure you would have given me
