Question fstab file and backup products

Hi all,

The fifth field in the /etc/fstab file specifies dump frequency isn't it ?now this value can be theoretically used by backup products isn't it ? can anyone give practical examples where this value is used ?

No, I think it is used only to determine which filesystems need to be dumped. You can read the manpage of fstab:
Quote:
The fifth field, (fs_freq), is used for these filesystems by the dump(8) command to determine which filesystems need to be dumped. If the fifth field is not present, a value of zero is returned and dump will assume that the filesystem does not need to be dumped.

Personally, I don't care about this option.

Perhaps if you set up a certain filesystem as a RAM drive with tmpfs like in netbooks you might want to dump it like dumping RAM. In case you have logs or something you may want upon a system crash. This way you at least know what happened.
