my 40G drive running RH9 decided to eat itself. reboot, / comes up fine. Goes to scan /home and hangs. I get sent to a shell where I run fsck.ext3 and get an error after about 30 minutes that says oops 2 a line of what seems to be assembler and then service error 11.

any ideas??

You can boot into your system by temporarily disconnecting /home. Boot a rescue system. (I think that there is one on your Red Hat install CD.) Mount your / partition and edit /etc/fstab to comment out the line for /home. Umount / and then reboot into your system. You should be running without /home. Log in as root and start working on repairing your /home partition if possible.

If not, then format the /home partition, uncomment /home in /etc/fstab, and reboot. Then you will have to recreate all of your users.

each time I run fsck or e2fsck on /home, I get a signal 11 error. do I have a memory stick going bad?

It would be helpful to have the complete error message. Just so we know what our options are, do you have a backup of the /home partition? Also, what exact e2fsck command(s) have you tried? When did the problem start - a specific event or did this just start happening?

Once I installed some memory incorrectly and it caused I/O errors because the transfer from memory buffer to disk failed. These errors occured on every partition, not just one. So if only /home is having errors then bad memory is an unlikely suspect.

thanks guys. i've run the WD diag disk and it says the HD is fine. I figure I'll nuke it and start again. I was mainly trying to get some info off the disk before I nuked it.
