fresh installation hangs on boot (grub?)

I've have a brand new machine with 4 x 80gb SATA (Seagate) hdd's, a Tyan S2865 mobo, AMD64 3000+ cpu and a 3ware 9500 RAID card.

I've set the RAID up as two RAID 1's and continued to install CentOS 4.0 (32bit installation (centOS being a distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0)) with no problem.

I get prompted to reboot which is when my problem occurs.

The system hangs as it attempts to read/boot from the hdd; I'm greeted with a flashing underscore (which I believe to be the GRUB boot loader?).

These are my partitions and grub.conf file:

partitions:
Code:
DEVICE START END SIZE TYPE MOUNT POINT

VG VolGroup00                  152352M   VolGroup
LV LogVol00                    150272M   ext3         /
LV LogVol01                      1984M   swap
/dev/sda
   sda1              1     13     101M   ext3         /boot

/dev/sdb
   sdb1              1   9724   76277M   physical v
grub.conf
Code:
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title CentOS 4.0(2.6.9-5.0.3.EL)
      root (hd0,0)
      kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
      initrd /initrd-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL.img
Forgot to add - thanks in advance !!

Further looking around the interweb hints that I need to check my device.map (whatever one of those is). Here's my findings if it helps:

Code:
(fd0)      /dev/fd0
(hd0)      /dev/sda

Hi

First thing is you have connected to 2 drives to the same channel, if it is the same as IDE this will half there performance as you have set them to mirror.

I had the same problem I used a older version of grub which worked.

PS, Paul said to say hello
