free opensource Version control for Documentation


Does any body knows any good free opensource Version control for Documentation which can understand pdf doc docx odt excel files and any other document format??I do not want any online solution I want it to be installed by my self and has web interface for network usage.

Git uses local repositories so that might work for you.

We use it for documentation and it handles binary and text files.

It has a web plug-in as well (GitWeb) but I've never used it.

do you realy mean that it shows diffs for doc and pdf in human readable form?

I've never tried to diff binary files, if that's what you mean. The git diff command has a slew of options you can use, but a simple git diff <filename> will show you what's been added and removed.

Probably the best option is to try it out.

Those are called Document Management Systems. Not version control systems.

I've only used Sharepoint (which is obviously not open source). My Google searches, however, are pointing at Plone for this.

I assume that by "I do not want any online solution", you really mean that you don't want a SaaS solution; an Intranet solution would be fine.
