You're asking a lot. There's free and there's good, but is there a good, free pop3 provider? Try http://www.hotpop.com/index.jsp but don't be expecting something for nothing.
I was just looking to use something that could be brought up on Pine, that's all, maybe IPMAP. I dunno, whatever I could use in command line Linux would be good.
yahoo.co.uk provides pop3 access as standard(free). You can use it with anything. I don't know whether they also provide smtp relaying, since I use my ISP's.
The reason I specify yahoo.co.uk is that they seem to have an offer slightly different from yahoo.com (more storage apparently) so other things might differ.

Only stipulation is you have to send a Dollar in. This keeps spammers out or from trying to get free pop accounts with their system. If you only going to spam, most won't waste their time in sending a simple dollar. Plus it sort of helps support the servers, etc.
You also get webspace and also access to a shell account too..
