Format a partition

Is there any way to format a single partition and not the entire hard disk?

I know I could create the filesystem on that partition again to erase the data, but can I actually format it?

thanks

Creating the filesystem and formatting are the same thing.

"mkfs.whatever /dev/whichever" is the standard way.
