Installing Apps From Source: tar.gz

For all you newbies that have been asking how to install a package from source with a tar.gz, found a good article that covers it. Go here: http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue74/okopnik.html

Thanks for the link.
The article covers in detail one of the major obstacle for a Linux newbie.
It looks like the author 've been there, done that and.. screwed it , like a newbie would do.

Some great software is not available in packaged format, that article is giving me the courage to download it and give a try at compiling it.

Thanks again

I'm glad it brought encouragement to try compiling from source, and if any problems arise.. don't hesitate to come back and ask for help..

I think that it would be a good idea to make this kind of threads apart from the rest as they really help people out in general and not in a specific way as for most . it would save time and head aches to all of us . that's why this site is gorgeous

shameless donation plug

we're trying to get jeremy to make an faq for stuff like that - but it kinda falls behind other priorities... like getting money for the site.

give give give give

hey Isajera , can you comment on the IBM thread , please ? yesterday i looked at all those beautiful IBM machines and saw them talking of Linux future and all and i felt a bit angry at the world after i read jeremy talking about it i said why not , haven't SICKBOY's screenshot thread reached so many people ( i was amazed ) maybe people can post enough emails to make them think about it .(in my hometown we use to say: there's lots of chicken but the dogs are hungry
