Unhappy First day a Linux Sysadmin !


Hi guys , in the next couple of days im going to get my job as a Linux admin . this is the first time for me to do real life administration. i am really confused , don't know what are the things i should be doing first once i put my hands on the servers . I am really afraid to do some thing wrong due to lack of knowledge of previous configuration done by other admins " this will not be good for my first day of course" , i really need advice from Linux sysadmins on things i should do , and things to avoid . what did you do on your first day ?.
really appreciate your help .

make lists and document in a orderly way. Find out what you have in the way of servers, then find out how they are being backed up and how you confirm they are being backed up.
Find out what apps are living on those servers, who the owners of those apps are, what are the procedures for outages (if any) so you know when you can reboot should you have to.
Find out the system configuration of each server such as network info, configuration scripts that are important and are there any DR plans available. this is where your scripting can come in handy. Then determine what (if any) monitoring and alerting is in place and if none, how do you get even a rudimentary one put in place. The list goes on.

Hi,

Make an inventory of the five 'W' (Where, Who, What, Why, When) with regards to the servers, applications, services, configurations, and so on and take it from there one step after another. If all is working then you can dedicate your first day(s) on the job to that inventory. It'll serve you a lot when encountering problems later on or trying to resolve issues.

In addition, if you are part of a team, then start by watching, doing and learning what the other team members are doing.

Hi,

It really depends on the size of your administration team. Most will provide a mentor or peer who will initially provide the lead during exposure to the systems. Most good house teams do have lead admin(root) that will delegate or supervise as to your duties until you actually show your worth. After that you will have access to the systems relative to admin experience or how well your able to work through problems.

Even if your not the only Admin(root) then hopefully you learn to document your experiences & performance with the equipment. Good system Doc logs maintained by you from day one may help to back out of problems or even trend what you are doing. You should be able to discern from these logs information to help improve yourself and how you address system problems.

Semantics within the shop will dictate as to how you learn to adapt to the situations with the systems and how they are maintained. If you are the only Admin(root) then you had better be able to communicate with others outside the technical arena as this too will decide or dictate how well things will be. Learn to marry with different disciplines.

Remember 'root' is God when it comes to the systems! Plus, if it's not broke don't fix it.

Thanks for all your responses and it really helps , i just hope to give a nice first day impression . and will tell you how it goes after three days from now.

Exactly. Familiarize yourself with existing documentation and operating procedures. If you don't understand something, then ask questions.

Believe me, the guy who asks a whole lot of questions (and learns from them) is much preferred over the guy who just does stuff and breaks things.

Please post a couple weeks of important details. It will be very good for the next up and coming admins to have a guide book for the first days on the job.

hi guys ,
just want to tell you how it goes , will i stared today i found one only senior member , my supervisior . it went all good,today was just a walking through the system and seting up my machine. but i had surperise that my supervisior is leaving in 2 weeks and he should hand over the system in this period !! . mostly it is a small system a group of servers (dont really know exacly what they do , thats will be tomorrow`s task) used to maintain a working environment for java developers . usually deploying web project (any one can advice about new stuff in this field the one must know ) and java enterprise apps.thats all for today and will keep you updated for the hand over and how it goes.

Hi,

If your supervisor is leaving in two weeks (VERY short time indeed) then make sure you take notes on everything or ask him for any and all documentation about the network and the different setups. The better you document things, the less questions you'll have when he's gone.

Hi,

I would ask for information or personal doc notes if he is willing to share for the systems. Sometimes it can be difficult to read others notes but at times you might get some insight to what was being done at the time. Technically speaking the notes should be part of the systems documentation but like some people, he would keep personal logs. I do! Diaries of a MAD SYS admin.
