Angry Firewire port problems

Hi,

I am trying to get a Sony DFW-VL500 firewire camera working on my Dell 8100 laptop under Redhat Linux 7.3. I recently performed an up2date on everything including the kernel which is now at version 2.4.20-13.7.

I created the correct modules:
/sbin/insmod ieee1394
/sbin/insmod ohci1394 attempt_root=1
/sbin/insmod raw1394
/sbin/insmod video1394

Created the correct nodes:
cd /dev
mknod raw1394 c 171 0
chmod 666 /dev/raw1394
mkdir video1394
chmod 775 video1394
cd video1394
mknod 0 c 171 16
mknod 1 c 171 17
mknod 2 c 171 18
chmod 775 *

Downloaded and installed the latest versions of libraw1394 and libdc1394 from Source Forge.

And when I try to run the "grab_gray_image" program in the examples directory of the libdc1394 distribution, I run into problems. It appears to print out a number of camera parameters and then hang without ever grabbing an image. In fact, using gdb, I was able to determine that it is hanging on a raw read of the video device.

What I'm wondering is whether there is a problem with my firewire port.

I've tried using a different camera, firewire hub (for power) and set of cables with the same results. The same cameras work on other people's laptops.

I've also tried using Windows ME (ungh!) running the CMU firewire driver software to no avail. WinME won't even let me install the driver and if I manually copy it to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM, WinME doesn't see it.

My question is, is there an easy way to test my firewire port to see if there is a problem?

BTW, I've also tried to use coriander under Linux.

Here is the output of the grab_gray_image program:

I prefer to use dvgrab over any other application I've tested. It has a much easier interface for one, but more importantly gives you easy to understand error messages.
