I'm having boot problems, and I'm almost certain that it's due to my motherboard. Someone on another thread told me that he had the same problem with the same motherboard, but he fixed it by downloading some drivers from www.nvidia.com for his specific distribution (redhat 8.0). I haven't had a chance to try to install the drivers yet, but we'll see.

I've just tried to install the motherboard drivers, but encountered several problems:
Since I can't boot linux normally, in order to install the drivers, I have to start up in bash (doing ctrl-x from LILO, passing it the parameter init=/bin/bash). Once at the command prompt, though, it won't let me mount the floppy drive. Apparently /etc/fstab doesn't have any reference to the floppy drive. Am I doing it wrong? (mount /floppy)
If I ever get it mounted do I just use the rpm command to install the .rpm drivers from nvidia?

I have a 1.8 gig athlon XP with an ASUS A7N266-VM motherboard.

I believe I've installed both of the linux versions I've tried correctly (I've tried RH 8.0, and Mandrake 9.0, currently I have Mandrake installed).

The install process went off without a hitch, however, when I try to boot, I run into the 'finding module dependencies' boot hang.

My problem is that I cannot boot up linux on my system.

Well, two out of three have the Asus A7N motherboard. Here is one solution:

Let me know if this works.

Same Problem Here!!

I also run an AMD XP 1800 on an ASUS A7N266-vm and have similar issues w/ module dependency hang. I don't have a problem with the disks since I have successfully installed RH8 on a different system. I use a Boot disk "syslinux 1.75" and still run into problems. For instance now it hangs on boot and asks for a different disk.

I have attempted to install this 3 times and still no luck. I wonder if it has to do with any of the special drivers required on this MOBO.

I do think that it has something to do with the motherboard. I haven't been able to get linux to run either. Using the rescue mode, I can log in as root on the bash shell, but I dont know enough about linux to actually anything once I'm there.

I think that deadbug entry in this thread is the solution to our problems, but I havent been able to decipher the instructions that he linked to.

(My problem is this, that I cant figure out section two, here)

I'm using the srpm method, and I dont know how to download the SRPMs from the bash shell, and I dont know if I'm using the right commands for bash to find and use them when I download them onto the fat32 partition of my hard drive using XP.

Also, neither the rpm --rebuild or the rpmbuild --rebuild commands work.. I always get a 'command unknown' error or something similar. I also dont know what to input as the path to my rpms either.

But.. Yeah... I'm linux illiterate at this point, anyone care to have a go at solving my problems?

So are u booting to the linux os on your floppy? I need to have an OS to load any more modules. If i can boot to a floppy and see my drives I'd try modifiying files. I've been at this a while, and am equally frustrated....

I too am going to try deadbugs advice. So far when I tried to have it do a text login I still get the same Hang Up.

Unhappy Possible reason for my error!!

Okay well I may have an Idea what this could be in my case. I failed to mention that my MOBO does have a problem, the PS2 mouse port does not work. Even though during configuration my USB Explorer mouse is detected.
Possibility? I dunno. I'll probably just end up building a new box to spec for linux.

I think I have a bypass

I figured out how to get past the boot hang at 'Finding Module Dependancies', at least, I know how to bypass it on my machine.

For those of you with the ASUS A7N266 mobo, are you using the USB bus extension?

Like, the two plug USB port that isnt physically part of your mobo?

I took my computer to a friend, he plugged it up at his house, and we went to work on getting it fixed. And it worked, without us doing anything.

I took it home, hooked it back up, and got the same error. I started to unplug the devices I have attached to my system. Currently, I have all of my USB devices unattached, and the OS is booting without a problem.

I'm sure some people will want to use their USB devices, and I'm positive that there's a better fix for it, but if you're just trying to get linux to boot, like I was, then thats your solution.

The case of the USB ports

The last message was definitely the clincher for me - I have virtually the same configuration described in the earlier messages - AMD Athlon, ASUS motherboard et al, except that I have a dual boot with WinXP. My machine used to hang at the same place until I read this message and disconnected my USB devices. Now it boots all right, thank God!

However, there still remains the problem of getting my USB devices to work. One of these is a Webcam, something I'm not very concerned about, but the other is a printer, which would definitely like to be able to connect to my machine when I work on Linux. Could someone suggest a way to solve this problem?

Thanx
Ramsu

The boot hang occurs only with the USB extensions.. the ones that are integrated into your motherboard dont cause anything to hang..

Hopefully this helps...

The problems are the same to me. The same processor, motherboard etc. But I have succeded in booting by disconnecting the extra USB´s. But I have another prob regarding the network adaptor. Mandrake doesn´t find the card despite installing drivers from Nvidia. Any suggestions??

I have installed RHL 9.0 and Mandrake 9.1 on the A7N266-VM motherboard and it works fine EXCEPT when I have anything plugged into the USB port, then it hangs at "Checking Module Dependencies"

Other than that, the way I got the install to work is as follows:

1) Set up the computer with a PS/2 keyboard and mouse (or the USB problem will hang the computer and the install will not work).

2) Install RHL 9.0 or Mandrake 9.1 from CDs burned from ISO images. Make sure you have the kernel headers installed on your system--you will need them later for compiling nVidia drivers. If in doubt (which I usually am) install the complete kernel source package. Probably overkill, but I am not a kernel hacker... You can do a graphic install and the new version of the GRUB loader work just fine; both will install a generic vForce 2 video driver which works, but you will want to upgrade to the latest nVidia video driver for best performance.

3) Get the nVidia graphics driver http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=li..._ia32_1.0-4349 and the nForce 2 chipset drivers (for audio, ethernet and supposedly USB...) http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_nforce_1.0-0248 and follow the directions on their respective pages for installs. The directions might sound complicated, but it really is pretty easy and pretty smooth.

For the video driver, running the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run script worked great on both the RH and Mandrake distros.

For the rest of the nForce drivers, I had success using the Source RPM package for Mandrake, but it the Source RPM DID NOT work for RedHat (I kept getting an error that there was no “debugfile.list” what ever that means). However the Kernel Tar File NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0248.tar.gz worked like a champ.

Does anybody have a fix for the USB issue? I can live with using the old PS/2 keyboard/mouse, but I want to use my wireless USB keyboard & mouse!
