file where login passwords is stored


Where is the login password stored in Ubuntu? What is that file? Can I open that file?

Passwords are typically in /etc/shadow. The password is encrypted, so it will not be of much use to you.

What problem are you trying to solve--e.g. did you forget your password?

The same way you open any other file.....it might require root privileges (on Ubuntu, that means use "sudo")

eg--in a terminal:
sudo gedit /etc/shadow
OR
sudo more /etc/shadow

You don't!!---Think about it: If it were possible to decode the passwords then someone could break into the account of every user on the system.

You don't. This is by design, to help protect against (among other things) precisely what you're attempting to do.
