file system error

I have a problem when I want to start Linux on my machine. The system asks me to run fsck manually because there is a file system with errors. It also says unattached inode 176002. Then It asks me to enter the root password which I forgot!! How can I solve this problem.
Thanks a lot

Hi, and welcome to LQ ...

In this situation it would be handy if you had
Knoppix or some other rescue-CD handy that
would allow you to run the extfs-check of a
CD rather than trying to boot.

Tink

All I really have is a boot disk. Is there any way to get around this problem?
Thanks again

Boot-disk as in floppy or CD?

If you have a distro-specific boot-cd chances are
that it supports a rescue mode.
