Fedora Core 2 logout causes unclean shutdown

I'm getting acquainted with FC 2. I just installed it on an old Gateway P III / 650 MHz system with 500 MB of RAM. I completely updated the system including the kernel.

When I log in as root using KDE, then I select logout from the "Start" menu (not really the start menu but you know what I mean), it doesn't just log out of X Windows. What happens is that the screen goes black but the machine does not power down. I'm not sure what state it's in exactly. When I try to log in to the machine using from another machine I find that it's not up.

I power down manually, and when it come back up I get the message that the machine was shut down uncleanly.

Why would simply logging out of KDE cause the machine to shut down, or whatever it's doing?

Thanks,

E
