I am using Fedora 6 which was running GNOME(I think)under my login and after I ran some updates and restart the computer, now when it comes up, the GUI looks very basic (TWM) and I do not have my wallpaper and all of the cool stuff it had before. It is running TWM. How in the heck can I get it back to normal. What control the GUI when the machine is started in Fedora 6? help

I've had this before too but luckily for me it was on a machine where the GUI wasn't important. Basically it sounds like the update has broken some dependencies. If you do a search on this forum, you should find some help. I recall that it has been discussed before but I can't remember the resolution.
check the system configuration for which set of X startup scripts are being run, im not sure where they are located in Fedora, so i cant say anymore then that. (this assumes the problem is that a configuration file or setting was replaced during update with default one, by default, X uses TWM and friends as the basic X session).
I have played around with /etc/X11/desktop and /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/X11/prefdm and etc.. but to no evail! Where are the .conf files that you are talking about?
