FC4 auto partition gives hda1 and VG and LV drives

I just installed Fedora Core 4 on a Dell inspiron 510m laptop with a 60 GB hard drive. I chose auto partitioning during setup and it gave me some wierd setup i've never seen before. After a successful install i ran:
Code:
df
and got the following:
Code:
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 55611724 2612796 50128452 5% /
/dev/hda1 101086 9950 85917 11% /boot
/dev/shm 257208 0 257208 0% /dev/shm
There is no swap here. Don't i need a swap? How do i make one now? Does this seem like a wierd setup?

it's not "weird" but certainly exceptionally minimal. you don't need a swap if you have enough RAM to cope with whatever you want. but as FC4 tries to use LVM2 where possible, adding a swap is an absolute doddle. just use system-config-lvm (or somethign of a similar name if that's not right) to shrink LogVol00 and create a swap in the space. personally i tend to give more insightful names than LogVol00, e.g. LVSwap for a swap logical volume. once it's create, just format it like any other /dev/hdXY partition and add an fstab entry.
