Fast user switching

I am using Mandrake 9.2, and have gotten multiple logons to work. However, there is one difficulty. When I login on tty2 at F2, then type startx --:1, I have to hit buttons <alt+ctrl+(F1,F2, F7, F8)> repeatably to get the interface started.

Is this what everyone has to do? Or is there a configuration I'm forgetting, or a command to add?

The only time I notice any problems changing between X sessions like this is when I've just started one. If you wait a couple of seconds, can you change between F7 and F8 easily or is it still mibehaving?

When I start the second session, the screen will just black out, no matter how long I leave it. After I hit the buttons a buch of times, and Gnome or KDE starts, I don't have any problem switching.
