Failed Dist upgrade.. how to recover data?
 

hi all,

I had a debian 3.1 install that I tried to upgrade to 4.0. Now as it turns out the OS HDD (/dev/hda) has something seriously wrong with it so I need to replace the drive.

My concern is for the data I have on my LVM set up which is as follows:

/dev/hdc1 - LVM
/dev/hdd1 - LVM
/dev/hde1 - LVM
/dev/hdf1 - LVM
/dev/hdg1 - LVM

Sorry for the blurryness of the above pics.Would it be safe to replace hda with a new HDD, and do a fresh install on that? If so how would I be able to keep the LVM data as it currently is?

Any help would be great as my last back up was 27/9/7 an I have since added more things which i dont have a copy of.

Getting a new HD and doing a fresh install onto that will be fine. What you could do is as you're partitioning the new drive, add in mount points (thru LVM) in the paritioner in the installer. That should grant you access (as it was) to those partitions.

I apologize if my theory is completely wrong here, as I've never messed around with LVMs.

I think you have another option. Based on the concepts of LVM you can do a PVMOVE on the second disk. This will do all what you want. Check this :
