External IP and apache webserver

Hello,

It has been a while since I have setup my linux webserver but I have come to a point where I need it. I have a box running Red Hat 9 and apache is configured properly. My ISP blocks port 80 so I have the Listen set to 8080 in httpd.conf .

In a browser I type in my linux server's internal IP:8080 and the apache page appears. If I replace the internal IP with my external IP:8080 it does not work. I would like for my webpage to be accessible outside of my network using my external IP address but am stuck with how to do this. I know it can be done on my hardware/software as I have had it setup before. Any help appreciated.

p.s. I have also noticed that my port sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I have the linux set to a DMZ on my router as well.

You need to set up your router to forward port 8080 to the apache box.

That is unusual... I forwarded public port 8080 to the port 8080 on my linux machine, but changed listen to 80 in httpd.conf and now simply entering in my external ip address works.

Thank you.

After reading your post script about your "DMZ" forwarding, I'd say that port-forwarding is redundant, since everything goes to your linux box anyway. Did you restart apache after changing the Listen directive? You might want to make sure you're listening on 8080 by doing a
Code:
netstat -ant

It is listening on port 80, not 8080, I guess I had changed the conf back. It is working though. Would port 80 being blocked not allow www.domain.com to work but allow domain.com to work?

Also, I am attempting to setup apache to use user accounts so that it accesses files from /home/user/html Is there a guide on how to configure this somewhere? I have been searching for a while now with no luck. Thanks.

I have set DocumentRoot and Directory in my httpd.conf as such:

DocumentRoot "/home/kimball/www"

The directory exists yet when I visit the server it gives me a 403 forbidden error -> "You don't have permission to access / on this server."
