Executing programs from a terminal window is faster

Ive noticed in several instances now that when i have a terminal window opened, such as konsole, and i execute all my programs from it, such "as xmms &", the whole system feels MUCH faster than if i would execute programs from the kicker menu or run program dialog. Perhaps the system assesess far less resources to programs started in the same terminal context.

Im probably noticing these speed increases because on my laptop things seem to get bogged down easily when i have a large number of transactions going on, wifi, tabbed web browser, LimeWire, etc.,. These increases were not evident on my desktop, not right away anyway. My friend suggested this and an immediate speed increase occured. Can this knowledge be used to load everything in my distro in a single terminal instance from boot?

Can anyone else attest to this speed increase?
