ESS1879 sound card very choppy

Hi guys.. I have a Compaq Armada 7400 with integrated ESS1879 audio. I compiled the kernel to use the OSS sb driver, which is apparently the correct driver. However, the sound is *very* choppy. Any ideas why this may happen? Unfortunately, linux-on-laptop.org only links to the rather unhelpful Compaq site. Thanks for any help...

ALSA Problem

I downloaded the ALSA package, and everything compiled fine. However, now when loading the modules I'm getting "xxx.o will taint the kernel: no license". Apparently, in the new kernels, modules must declare their "freeness", so does anybody know what I need to do to get ALSA working? Thanks...

ummm... i wasn't aware that the license tainted would prevent the modules from running... i think it was intended to prevent people from mailing kernel hackers about closed-source bugs they couldn't fix. it should still work.

Didn't seem like it was working.. Turned out that I downloaded the wrong tarball (about 5 minor version versions old) so I no longer get that message. I'm still having some problems like general ALSA setup... seems a little complex with all its aliasing and stuff.... Thanks for the info, though.

How did you get the driver to work, Im tryin to use the OSS 398c driver, I run the ./oss-install. config it as a sound blaster card, match the IRQs and DMA and I/O to what i see on the Bios. but it doesnt work. I also tried to use it at a ESS1879 Audiodrive Plug and Play. but when i do "soundon" it just errors out. what info would be helpful for you all to assist me. its a Compaq Armada 7400 with an integrated es1879 soundcard and Im using Slackware 9.2 linux.
