Error writing converted video file to dvd

Hi

Need some help understanding and fixing this problem.

I am converting an *.avi file to the mpeg format required for DVD, and have been following - to the letter - the instructions found here: http://applications.linux.com/articl.../04/17/2058219

All proceeds well until I reach the stage of burning the DVD and this is what I get:

~$ growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0 -dvd-video ./dvd
Executing 'mkisofs -dvd-video ./dvd | builtin_dd of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/sr0: "Current Write Speed" is 8.2x1385KBps.
:-[ WRITE@LBA=10h failed with SK=5h/ASC=21h/ACQ=02h]: Input/output error
:-( write failed: Input/output error
/dev/sr0: flushing cache
/dev/sr0: closing track
/dev/sr0: closing disc

This, even though I can see the DVD when I play it on my hard-drive by running mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device ./dvd

I have made the necessary adjustments for my device at /dev/sr0 so I am completely confused as to what is going on. This isn't a permissions issue, and the device plays and writes well under other conditions.

So, I'm flummoxed.

Any assistance please?

I would recommend using the program "DeVeDe" it's easily installed under synaptic (debian)It works great and you can pick a couple of different formats and burn to an iso (if you wish)which you can mount and view to see if you borked it up before burning it!
I know it's not a perfect answer to your problem but using a nice graphical interface with a well written program seems easier to me!(imho)

Thanks GliderMike

That won't solve the problem as most other programmes will be using the command line as their back-end and installing yet another piece of software for another distro than that I am using is not what I am looking for.

I've googled on this error message and can't find anything so I hope that someone here has had experience with this and fixed it?

Cheers
