error with my screen rez

hello all after reading a few posts about changing your xwin resolution i've managed to hoop the system. Please keep in mind i've had the system running for a few weeks so i'm as green as a martian here.

here is where i'm at. When before i played with things the systems went straight into xwin. Now i get the login command line. From there if i type in startx i get an error. I've screwed up my rez settings and now want to put them back. The prob is i'm a long time MS windows guy so i have no idea what program i type in to edit the file from the command line. I can find the file but cant edit it. If it was does i would edit:\filename here. Can someone tell me what program i use from the command line to edit the file.xf86config-4?

Thanx all in advance.

the best (and easiest) command line prog is pico

just type pico /etc/X11/XF86Config (or wherever the XF86Config is) and hit enter

this will load the file up and now your ready to start editing, hope this helps.

i have the file up but dont have permission to edit it.. how do i change the file or login as admin so i can change this file? OR how do i rename the old XF86Config-4old to the used version.

To login as admin type 'su -' and enter root's password
