error starting blackbox

I downloaded, compiled, and installed blackbox.

But when I run /usr/local/bin/blackbox I get an error:

Quote:

BaseDisplay::BaseDisplay: connection to X server failed.

Anyone know what this means?

Do you have .xinitrc in ur home directory?
If not create it and add the following line

exec /usr/local/bin/blackbox
now type startx

HTH

You finally got xfree to install? cool
here's what my /home/hanzerik/.xinitrc looks like:

# Begin .xinitrc
xscreensaver -nosplash &
exec fluxbox
#exec blackbox
# End .xinitrc

Iput both fluxbox and blackbox on, still trying to figure out which one i like more.

What can I do if I want to be able to choose whatever desktop I want to run, WITHOUT going in and uncommenting lines in my .xinitrc or editing any other files.

I saw a post a few days ago about that. A type of text menu that lets you chose what wm you want to you use.

I'm not sure, I have always booted up to runlevel 3 , and have edited the file before i startx if I want to switch desktops.

here it is:

blackbox is pretty cool, only thing i don't like is

1. I have to edit the menu file if i want to add a new program. there should be a blackbox program to manage the menu instead of breaking down and editing a file.

2. When I "iconify" a window, in order to restore that window I have to click on 3 different menus. First the main blackbox menu, then the "Workspace List" sub-menu, then the "Icons" sub-menu, and then finally the actual window that I want to restore. That's just too much clicking. I wish the "iconify" feature worked easier without so much clicking.

Try Fluxbox, I thinks its a little better, looks just like blackbox, but has some more cool fetures. When you minamize in fluxbox, it goes to the tool bar at the bottom, not to a workspace.

1. there is, i use bbconf. have a search.
2. yeah i'll give you that one. i just don't bother to iconify things... i *think* it's possible to make icons be included in alt tab cycling tho.. oh here's a patch... http://bbtools.thelinuxcommunity.org/available.phtml
on there somewhere.
