error message at login

This is a question I thought I had the answer to before but now my previous solution no longer works. After logging in but before getting to the Gnome desktop, I get the error message " could not look up internet address for xxxx (xxxx is my host name) This will prevent Gnome from operating properly. Try adding xxxx to the file /etc/hosts". xxxx is already in /etc/hosts and is also listed in /etc/sysconfig/network. What am I missing?
