Hi!

Okay, so i want ubuntu on my old IBM A30 laptop. So i downlaoded the file i needed on ubuntu.com, but when i boot the cd on my laptop it runs soooooo sloooow, and sometimes it freezes. So i thought "hey! why dont i just install ubuntu from my home computer onto a laptop harddisk?!", so i did. The only problem with that is, that when i put the harddisk back into my laptop, it just tells me that "Error loading operating system". Is this because i have to do something about GRUB or what? because my laptop does not have GRUB..

And does anybody know if my laptop is running, what i assume is the live cd, so slow? if i found an install only disk, would it solve my problem? in that case, where do i find such?

Firstly, if the laptop is old then ubuntu may run slowly. There are specific distros designed to run well on old machines e.g. puppy linux, DSL etc.

Secondly, if you installed ubuntu on the laptop disc using a PC, then the drive mapping may not be correct if the PC had other hard drives attached at the time of install. Still, on the Suse install CD there is an option 'boot installed system' - maybe the ubuntu one has this option too? Then you can correct grub from within the installed system.

Okay, i'll try to find a real ubuntu install disk (instead of my live cd) and see if it has the same option as the SUSE.

And even if it's an old computer, i think it's able to run ubuntu. it's just reading the disk and installing it it has problem with...
