Unhappy Error in compiling kernel

My linux is Redhat Linux 9 , kernel 2.4.20

I met an error while updating kernel to version 2.4.4.

/download/Kernel/linux/include/linux/sched.h:540: previous declaration of `xtime'
make[2]: *** [timer.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/download/Kernel/linux/kernel'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/download/Kernel/linux/kernel'
make: *** [_dir_kernel] Error 2

Can somebody help me ?

2.4.4?? somehow i doubt you're actually doing that version...

I'd assume you've been recompiling things and changing the config. this does make things a bit messy, so the best plan is normally to back up the .config file to a safe place, run "make mrproper" and replace the .config and go again. this will clear all the previously built modules and objects that might be causing this. compiling from totally clean should fix it.
