Error first boot from external hard drive

Hi,

I'm quite new using Linux but am trying to get it working...

Im trying to install Suse linux 8.0 (pro) on an Freecom 120 GB external harddrive. Everything goes fine during installation until the first (initial) boot. I eventually get these errors:

Code:
INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty"
INIT: Id "1~6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel
After this I'm unable to do anything (I can type something but I actually don't know anything that would help..).

When I shut down my laptop and try to reboot linux it gives some other errors:

Code:
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, errno=2
VFS: Cannot open root device "802" or 08:02
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:02
I've installed Linux on a 20GB partition on my external hard drive and the swap partition (0.5GB) is also on this drive. I've tried to locate the boot sector on the external drive but this gave an unbootable laptop so I put this back to the ordinary harddrive.

Any help at all is appreciated for I'm eager to start using Linux.

So It boots from your regular drive and everything else is on the external drive?

My guess is, that the support for USB/sata/exernal harddrives is not in the kernel, so it cannot get to the files that are on that drive.

Could you tell me what kernel are you using, is it the same one that you used during the install?

The external harddrive is USB right?

edit: Oh and welcome to the forums!

Indeed, I have the boot(sector) installed on /hda, and all my other files are on /sda (the external USB hard drive).
But in Windows this drive doesn't show as an exchangeble drive but really as a hard drive, so it doesn't behave as a USB-stick for that matter.

I haven't installed any other kernel than the one provided through installation. I also use the LILO bootmanager, if thats of any help.

edit: Should I use a different kernel? And if so, how do I change this?
edit2: I heard something about booting from after the 1024th cilinder, I placed my Linux partition after my windows partition, could this be an issue?

thanks for the welcome!

I've heard that various early versions of Windows don't like to be installed very far away from cylinder 0, but I've given Windows the first 120GB on my hard drive, then installed Linux on the remaining 40 GB with no problems.
