Error: Failed to start the X server

Hi.

I have SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 running on HP Mini 2133. It's been working like a dream since I got it, but one day I got the following error message when booting it:
Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose problem? <Yes> <No>.

X server output says alot of things, but I think this is the most important:
(==)Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
ACPI: OSPMOpen Called
ACPI: Opening device
(EE) VIA(0): No valid modes found

I then get the login:. I'm able to login, but I have no clue on what to do. How can I fix this?

Hi,

Ok, let's first get you back to graphical so you can get some work done...

Enter root mode, to do that enter "su -" (hyphen is needed) and supply the root pass. Go to the folder where the conf is located, like so "cd /etc/X11" and make a backup of the conf you have. Make a folder "mkdir Backup" then "mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/Backup/xorg.conf" (mind the upper LOWER case here!). Make a new xorg with VI, enter VI first, it's a basic life saver, read up a bit first! Basically, enter this
- vi (enter)
- hit "i" to Input text
enter this

Quote:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection
It's a basic conf for a VESA setup - slow, but it gets you going...

in VI enter [esc]-[colon]-w-q to write the new conf file
enter "startx" to try out...

Once graphical, visit this page...
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO.../x-config.html
to get back into the safe zone...

Luck

Thor

Solved

Thank you for great info Thor.

However I managed to solve the whole thing in a much easier way using typing in sax2 on the commandline after login. It started a application that fixed it all. Just clicked OK and rebooted. All is working again.

So...that means I learned something too, here.

Thanks!
