enumerate object symbols in symbol table

Suppose you have a file like: foo.o - it is object code. I am assuming it has be one of the formats:
IEEE, COFF, OaSys.

This is for a large group of files of unknown origin.

How do you enumerate the available symbols (like _mysub() ) that are in the symbol table in that file?

Or enumerate the symbols in a .lib file?

Thanks for any ideas.
