Editing lilo.conf & fstab

I cant boot a HD I have and have determined its due to a mistake I made.

When I enter file maintenance mode I bring the file up using VI
but I cant edit it as its always read only.

Changing permissions doesnt seem to help
Can anyone help me figure out how to edit these files?

You need to be root to change these files.

Also, make sure RCS isn't controlling the files (try "co [filename]" then edit it and then "ci [filename]")
