by the way how do you make a bootable floppy disk in mandrake 8. I need it to access x as my x server will not configure properly in x configurator and xf86config this x thing is being a real b****

What exactly was the problem with the x server?

maybe we could help you with that?

there should be a wizzy graphical thing to make it. im afraid im not too knowledgable on the subjext since i just use the installation cdrom for slack since it can be used just the same.


maybe now you'll heed the advice to make a bootdisk when you install ;)

you can make a bootable disk using the bzdisk kernel compiling option... if you don't know anything about kernel compiling tho, i'd suggest reading up first.

use mkbootdisk to erm. mk a boot disk.

mkbootdisk --help
for more info

or go to Mandrake Control Centre, and click Boot, Boot disk and go from there... but then if you've problems with X.....

Sorry but I am new at this and very confused? what I need to know is I have downloaded e.g. netscape 6.2 (linux) and cant seem to run it or anything for that matter is there something I am not doing?
I guess so or wouldnt be having this problem!!

Are you sure you downloaded an executable file?

I just checked their ftp site and I could only find a .tar.gz file (this is a bit like a .zip file, but different).

To use this, make sure you download it into a sensible directory (I use /home/username/downloads), open a terminal session (looks a bit like a dos-box) and move into that directory. Then type tar -zxpvf whateverthefileiscalled This will extract the files and you should see a subdirectory called Netscape (or something). Move into this, there should be a readme file there, read it.

Now, to answer your question, the problem you've been having is not to do with X, or Mandrake for that matter, but with Konqueror (I presume you're using KDE). As with Windows' Explorer, Konqueror has 'file associations' which tell it what program to open certain files. You have the same problems in Windows if you start using files of an unknown type. True executable files will not need a file-association, they should run on their own. I would suggest, also, that you do not set up a file association for .tar.gz files. As long as you use the command prompt (dos-box type thing) for extracting files, you should be OK.
