Question easy ethernet question

the card works fine etc, but i have the following annoyance

if my box is disconnected from my lan (or if all the other boxen on it are off) then slackware hangs for ages on bootup looking for a dchp server, this is more than mildly annoyning, what can i do about it?

thanks in advance

Simple?, sheesh...

Somebody wiser than me posted this:

http://web.gnu.walfield.org/mail-arc...uary/0610.html

"# OK, time to set up the interface:
if [ "$DHCP" = "yes" ]; then # use DHCP to set everything up:
echo "Attempting to configure eth0 by contacting a DHCP server..."
/sbin/dhcpcd"

It looks to me that your machine is waiting on a valid DCHP server to get its IP address. Check out the script in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 and see what it's trying to do.

Maybe set the timeout time to a lower value?

And no, I don't do networks

If you have a realtek chip nic then upgrading your kernel (and the 8139too module) will fix the dhcp time out problem. I used to get that with the 2.4.5 kernel but after installing 2.4.12 its not a problem anymore.
