DVD-RW - What type of DVDs to buy?

I'm a bit behind in this whole DVD burning technology...

I'm using Avidemux and DVDStyler to create my DVDs. I have some Memorex 4.7GB 16X DVD-R discs but they aren't playing in my home player. What should I look for in blank DVDs for burning movies? Should I go with lower burn speeds? DVD-R or DVD+R?

you standalone dvd-player might not support -dvd's .. only +dvd's.. My panasonic refuses to play ANY + DVD'S! Looking into the guides supplied with it, i learned that it doesn't know what to do with + DVD's.

But if you are certain that your standalone plays both formats, try burning on a lower speed. I usually burn my DVD's for playing in standalone on 4x speed.
