They are just like all other IDE burners, they use SCSI emulation. You'll need a later version of cdrecord or patch an old one so that you get DVD write support (from the large files).
Well I thought that at first, but the TDK DVD burner I got last night did not work, and that was using cdrecord to make a CD. When I plugged my TDK CD writer in, all was groovy.
So are you saying that I need to download and install the DVD athoring tools to even burn CD Roms?
