normally to "su" you need to be part of the "wheel" group... make sure that the username you use in X is part of the wheel group. That should fix the problem..

/etc/group should look something similar to this
wheel::10h34r3d,jhigdon

let me know if this fixes your problem or not.

What are you trying to do?
Try something like
su -c konqueror
if this is what you're using.

Cheers,
Tink

Are you trying to launch X apps after you su to root? If yes, then you probably need to do something similar to the following:
xhost + localhost
su -
DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
export DISPLAY
then launch X apps

Note the hyphen in stickman's syntax of the su command- that's usually the key. Issued by itself, the su command does not give you a true root login shell, which means that you do not have full root powers. When issued with the "-" or "-l" (lower-case L) options, you do get a full root login shell.
