Dual Booting Windows XP and Fedora Core 5

Hi everybody,

I am a Linux newbie and would like to dual boot Fedora Core 5 with Windows XP. My PC previously had Windows XP installed on a 40GB HD. I removed this and installed Fedora Core 5 on another 40GB HD. Now I want to enable dual booting on the system. Can I please have the steps as to how this can be done with grub as the boot loader?

Regards...

? you removed this Windows Install or this 40GB HDD?
Did you use the additional HDD 40GB for the whole FC5 setup?
Easier would be you install Windows 1st and then on the left free space FC5.
FC5 will recognize Win Install and offers you to fit it into Grub.
Thats it.
But as you see I am a bit confused what you really did?!?!

Wink Further Clarification

Hi,

Sorry I wasn't a bit clearer at first. Let me tell the full story. My friend has a PC booting with Windows XP Professional on a 40GB HDD. I removed this HD from his machine and installed another empty 40GB HDD on which I installed Fedora Core 5. On this I want to test Samba, Apache, Squid, etc. Now, like any friend , he wants his XP OS back. What I have with me at the moment is a 40GB HDD with XP and another with Fedora. What I want to do now is to install both HDDs into the machine and for Grub to give me an option of booting into either Fedora or XP. How can this be achieved????

Please advise...

Regards...

For example: /boot/grub/grub.conf
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,6)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora Core (2.6.16-1.2080_3.rhfc5.cubbi_suspend2)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.16-1.2080_3.rhfc5.cubbi_suspend2 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/
title Windooze
rootnoverify (hd0,0) <------------ here've to specified it within (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

You should know grub starts counting 0,1,2,....
So (hd3,8) would be the nines partition on the fourth harddisk.

is your friend ptlchetan who just asked the exact same question a couple hours ago??

if both OS installs think they're installed on the primary master, one of them is going to have problems. The way to do it is to install both drives in the computer, install one OS on one drive, and the another OS on the other. you're just asking for irritation if you continue on the road your on.
